If Football Isn’t Their Main Thing…
A while ago, a dad told us he was worried his son wasn’t as into football as the other kids.
The boy was only 5 or 6 at the time.
He enjoyed coming along to Foot-Tech for an hour a week but he wasn’t as obsessed with football like his friends were.
His worry wasn’t about ability or being better than the other kids.
It was about the long term.
He knew football can be powerful – for confidence, friendships etc and he didn’t want his son to miss out.
Our advice was simple:
Let him lead it.
Don’t push him and try not to compare him to the other children.
Fast forward a few years and that same child is into his second season with a grassroots team, won an individual award and absolutely LOVES football.
Nothing was forced or rushed.
It’s OK if football isn’t their main thing right now but that doesn’t mean it won’t ever be.
The main thing is they’re engaging with it in an environment they enjoy, then you build from there.
