One of the main issues in grassroots football…..
Easily one of the biggest issues in grassroots football…
Most think knowing loads about football makes you a good coach – WRONG
It doesn’t matter if you’re at Guardiola levels – if you can’t engage a child then forget about them learning anything.
If a coach can’t get on the same level as their junior players, the sessions quickly become boring
That’s when the fun stops and development drops.
We’ve been burnt with this in the past when we’ve recruited coaches who clearly knew the football side but couldn’t build relationships with the kids (they don’t last long with us).
Children might forget the football but they don’t forget how you make them feel.
We added a big section on this to our in-house training a few years ago and it makes such a difference.
Coaching courses should focus more attention on this area.
It’d mean more coaches have the knowledge that actually makes the difference.
We need to remember that 99.999% of children will never play professional football.
So, what is the goal?
The goal should be to use football as way to keep kids active, happy and to stay in sport well into adulthood.
The chance of this reduces if your child is being coached by someone who knows nothing about how kids learn.
Bear that in mind…
