Top Tip: Focus On Hard Work Over Results

For many high-schoolers it has been mock exam time recently in preparation for their GCSE’s.

For year 6 students it won’t be long before they do their SATs.

Things like this bring stress for young people.

We also see it a lot of this in kids sport – the big focus on the ‘result’.

One of the best tips we can give with this is to teach your child to focus on the work instead of the result.

A lot of children will work really hard but not get the grades they want.

Some will work hard but lose their football match/swimming race/tennis game etc.

But they have actually won.By working hard in the build-up, it means they instil in themselves a work ethic that will help them succeed in the future.

Whenever you hear successful people talk about their lives you rarely hear them mention getting good grades or winning all the time.

That’s not to say good grades aren’t important.

But it shows that a strong work ethic is the most important thing in the longer-term.

As the saying goes – ‘Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard’.

We want our children to succeed, but try to get across to them that the result doesn’t matter as long as they give it their all.

Set a high standard for them when it comes to hard work.

How many hours will they revise?

How many hours will they practise?

Explain to them that all you want is to know that they did all they could.

If they get a good result? Brilliant.

If not? Learn from it and apply the same work ethic next time.

They’ll thank you for this in the future.
